In recent years its cultivation has become very intensive and commercial, and now Rose is the principal cut flower grown in country. For cut flower use, the old rose varieties like Queen Elizabeth, Super Star, Montezuma, Papa Meilland and Christian Dior to mention few, are still popular for domestic Market. In recent times, with production for export gaining ground in the country, the latest varieties like First Red, Grand Gala, Konfitti, Ravel, Tineke, Sacha, Prophyta, Pareo, Noblesse. Virsilia, Vivaldi etc. are being grown commercially.
Commercial Roses for export are grown under controlled climatic conditions inside greenhouse in High- tech Production Units located in Karnataka, Tamilnadu, AP and Maharashtra etc. The export markets for Indian Roses are Japan, Europe, Middle East and Australia. Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority (APEDA), is responsible for export promotion and development of floriculture in India and offer various subsidy programs to support the Rose Growers to increase their export.
Major diseases on rose are Powdery Mildew, Downy Mildew, Die-back, Black Spot and Rose wilt. Roses attract a large number of pests which cause considerable damage. At almost every stage, be in the nursery or in beds, rose plants are prone to attack by various pests. Some of the commonly reported insects are Red Spider Mite, Thrips, Caterpillars and Red Scales.
